Special Needs Aide

Reach Dane/Reach Green offers a generous benefit package to regular employees that work 20 hours or more per week. The Special Needs Aide is responsible for assisting and partnering with the Teacher in the planning and implementation of daily learning activities for assigned children. Under supervision, prepares materials and sets up classrooms for training and instruction. Participates and assists in lesson planning and carrying out supervisor assigned tasks to reinforce instruction, strategies associated with behavior and/or IFSP/IEP plans. Performs a wide variety of related tasks to assist and care for children. Support assigned children with special needs/challenging or unsafe behaviors in large group as well as individually. Assist the Teacher in providing a creative, pleasant and developmentally appropriate learning experience for all children. Assist in assuring overall safety for assigned children. The Special Needs Aide will ensure the assigned child(ren) medical needs are being met.


  • Work with assigned child(ren) having diagnosed/suspected special needs and/or challenging or unsafe behaviors in large group as well as individually
  • Supports the goal and objectives of classroom activities by preparing materials, obtaining required supplies or equipment aligned with curriculum, behavior and/or IFSP/IEP plans
  • Actively works with child during an activity, and assists with clean-up after an activity
  • Assist the Teacher in completing the developmental assessments for assigned child(ren) as requested
  • Assist in preparing educational materials required to implement daily lesson plans
  • Attend and participate in all job relate meetings and trainings as assigned, as well as individual mentoring sessions; including completion of 25 hours of job related training annually
  • Assist Teacher and Teacher Aide in providing positive guidance and discipline
  • Documentation of completion of the Intro to Child Care Profession that are required by Wisconsin Day Care License Requirement (or must receive within 6 months of employment)
  • Experience working with people with disabilities
  • Will perform health tasks as delegated by Reach Dane nurses
  • Obtain Pediatric CPR certification within 6 months of employment
  • Knowledge of basic first aid
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Ride the bus with assigned child(ren) as needed
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Demonstrate sensitivity toward all cultures
  • Experience working with low-income and multi-cultural families
  • Have 25 hours of continuing education for each year of teaching experience
  • Bilingual, particularly Spanish and /or Hmong is desired
  • Other duties as assigned


*Part Year employees have built in vacations which include summer break, 2 weeks in winter, and spring break (part year staff follow the school district calendar in which their program is located)
