Head Start Program Director

The Head Start Program Director is responsible for Co-Directing in collaboration with the Early Head Start Program Site Director directing one of Reach Dane larger sites that has multiple classrooms for children ages 0 to 5 years old.  The Head Start Program Director will supervise and oversee the Head Start program, focusing on the children aged 3-5 years, at the site by providing a safe and nurturing environment for children that encourage their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. The Head Start Program Director will follow Head Start performance standards, policies and procedures, City of Madison and Wisconsin State Licensing Rules. The Head Start Program Director will provide reflective supervision and performance feedback for reporting staff. 


  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development Required
  • Masterís degree in Early Childhood Education, or Child Development Preferred; other related degrees will be considered 
  • Extensive experience in the management of Early Childhood programming .
  • At least 2 years of successful supervisory experience 
  • Registry Level 14 or above 
  • DPI certification in ECE or ECEEN or related DPI cert. or the ability to become DPI certified is desirable 
  • Must have a valid Wisconsinís Driverís License, motor vehicle and adequate liability insurance 
  • The Head Start Program Director will support and oversee a developmentally appropriate curriculum for enrolled children living in low-income, at-risk environments 
  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, Wisconsin Day Care Licensing requirements, Creative Curriculum, Early Childhood Accreditation, teaching competencies and curricula, parent-child relations, and family support environments 
  • Extensive experience in successful supervision, staff training and development, and in leadership and advocacy 
  • Knowledge of and experience with family childcare programming 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience with and sensitivity to low-income and families of diverse cultures 
  • Knowledge of and experience in special education is desirable 
  • Experience managing subsidized childcare 
  • At least 1-year experience in an early care education setting; experience teaching preschool children means completion of supervised student teaching or experience as a preschool teacher in a licensed program or employment as a public-school preschool teacher 
  • Must be willing to fulfill their responsibilities in accordance with the agencyís mission 
  • Preferred bilingual, particularly Hmong and / or Spanish 
  • Must secure Registry certificate within 90 days of employment 
  • Other duties as assigned
