Head Start Family Advocate

Department: Education 0-3
Location: Madison, WI

Hours: 40 hours/week

Pay $20.78 an hour

SUMMARY:
The Head Start Family Advocate (HSFA) will plan, design and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum for enrolled children. They will reinforce the crucial role of the parents as the primary educator of their children while ensuring the implementation of Performance Standards of component work plans. An HSFA will assume a lead role in implementing the Social Service Work Plan by providing on going comprehensive family development / self-sufficiency and social competency.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum educational requirement of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Early Childhood, Human Services, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or closely related field. Additional coursework may be required to meet the educational equivalent of a Home Based CDA.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational and team work skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge / skill in performing the following activities:
    • Assessing family needs, setting goals and developing plans of action
    • Providing case management, referral and support services to families
    • Facilitating support, educational and / or planning groups
    • Promoting community development, organization or advocacy work on behalf of low-income families
  • Experience working with high-risk families in a multicultural setting is a plus
  • Experience in organizing and facilitating meetings and family gatherings
  • Experience in identifying possible needs and referring families to specialized services in the areas of AODA, adult education / literacy, employability, parenting or mental health / outpatient counseling
  • Experience in educational home visitation program
  • Bilingual, particularly Spanish and / or Hmong may be required for some HSFA positions
  • Extensive experience working with low-income, multicultural environment
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle

*Part Year employees have built in vacations which include summer break, 2 weeks in winter, and spring break (part year staff follow the school district calendar in which their program is located)
